On the pension application Elizabeth notes that her husband, Jackson, served in Co. C, 5th Res(erves) (Vol 15, page 448, Muster rolls, VSLA) and died March 14, 1864 "at home on furlough from dropsy contracted in the Army." A Pittsylvania Co. record of deaths, 1850-1890 indicates death ca. 1862. Another Pittsylvania Co. record of deaths lists March 14, 1865 at 58 years of age, which is also on his tombstone.
The application also state that Jackson and Elizabethj were married on "July 31, 1838 at home in Pittsylvania County, Virginia."
Note: DROPSY is an old term for the swelling of soft tissues due to the accumulation of excess water. The condition is now described as Congestive Heart Failure.

Jackson Adkins was most probably named Andrew Jackson Adkins.

The 1850 Federal Census for the Northern District, Pittsylvania Co., VA, page 232B records Jackson Adkins (31) with wife Elizabeth (25) and children Elizabeth (12), Green (10), Polly (8), Lewis (5), and Isabel (2). Next door is his cousin Agnes [Adkins] Gibson and her husband Henry and their children.

The 1860 Federal Census for the North District, Pittsylvania Co., VA. Museville P. O., page 189, dated July 10, 1860 records Jackson Adkins (45) with wife Elizabeth (38) and children Elizabeth (17), Green B. (17), Polly W. (15), Lewis (13), Isabella (12), Sabina (10), Enox (10), Agnus (8), John (6), Lucy (6), and Henry A. (1). Nearby is Jackson's father, Owen Adkins Sr., as well as his uncle and father-in-law, Henry Adkins Sr. Jackson does not list any real estate but his personal estate is valued at $300. Owen lists real estate valued at $3,000 and a personal estate valued at $3,000 including slaves.

Jackson and Elizabeth had a daughter Elizabeth who married Spencer Adkins, son of Jackson's brother Mastin Adkins, after the war.
