The following is from a letter from E. Frederick Kile to Bo Hagen dated February 14, 2004. This identifies the people in a family photo he sent. The photograph was digitized and saved as KeilKileFamilyMechanicsburg1929.jpg on Dec 14, 2007. In part he writes: "Back Row, My Dad with his perennial pipe. Next my mothers aunt Fannie with her husband William Faust, mother's uncle on her maternal side."
With this in mind, this researcher was able to find William and Clara in the 1860 Federal Census: The 1860 Federal Census for North Newton, Cumberland Co., PA, Walnut Bottom P. O., page 543 dated June 20, 1860 records Clara Dissa Faust (3 - PA) living with her parents Philip (32 - PA) and Catherine (30 - PA) Faust and siblings Geo H. (6 - PA), Anna M. (2 - PA), and Wm W. (6/12 - PA). Philip is a miller with real estate valued at $750. The future husband to Dessie is David Halter who is living in Walnut Bottom in 1880 thus this 1860 census record is most probably that of our Dessie Clara Halter.

The 1870 Federal Census for Monroe Township, Cumberland Co., PA, Boiling Springs P. O., page 181 dated August 23, 1870 records Clara H. Foust (14 - PA) living with her parents Phillip (43 - PA) and Catherine (41 - PA) Foust and siblings Geo H. (16 - PA), Anna M. (12 - PA), Wm H. (10 - PA), and Laura (2 - PA). Philip is a miller with real estate valued at $0 and a personal estate at $500. The family lives next to Jacon Kutz (77), a retired farmer who has real estate valued at $2,000.
