Caleb enlisted as a Private in Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment Virginia on 11 March 1862. He is listed as deserted on 15 September 1862 (Estimated day) and returned to duty on 29 March 1864. He was wounded on 16 May 1864 at Drewry's Bluff, VA and admitted on 18 May 1864 at Chimborazo Hospital, Richmond, VA (Estimated day, wounded collar bone).
The 1870 Federal Census for North of the Dan River District, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia records Caleb (44) and Betsy (34) Adkins with children Witcher (20), Fenney (14), Monroe (8), Betsy (5), and Babe (1).
The 1880 Federal Census for Callands, Pittsylvania Co., Virginia, District 164 page 50A (page 9) records Calop J. Adkinds (62) with wife Elithabeth (50) and daughters Betty (14) and Elick (7) and son Benjamin (4). Next door is son Monroe Adkinds (21). Calop and Monroe are farmers and can not read nor write.
