Mr. Braxton Murray Cutchin Jr., Lt. Col. Ret., 93, of the Foothills Presbyterian Home, formerly of 210 Walnut Hill Drive, Easley, died Monday, June 7, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital.
Born in Isle of Wight County, Va., Mr. Cutchin was a Virginian by birth and manner. He was the son of B.M. Cutchin Sr. and Mary Cutchin, both deceased. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Class of 1932, and served actively as Class Agent. He was an owner and managing partner of Cutchin Oil Company until his retirement. Mr. Cutchin was a member of Easley Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon, Elder and Elder Emeritus. He was active in Scouting.
Upon graduation from VMI, Mr. Cutchin was commissioned a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Reserve. He served with pride during World War II, assigned to the Ordnance Department at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. In 1947, he was assigned to the Army National Guard, where he organized and served as first commanding officer of "B" Battery, 678th AAA, Easley. He retired from the Army Reserve in 1970 with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife of sixty years, Josephine Hunter Cutchin.
Surviving are three sons, Braxton Murray Cutchin III, of Greenville, Johnson Hunter Cutchin Sr., and his wife, Debra, of Easley, and William Joseph Cutchin, of Mount Pleasant; a daughter, Mary Josephine Cutchin Phail, and her husband, Andrew, of Easley; seven grandchildren, Robert Braxton Cutchin (Lynn), of Los Angeles, Calif., Lee Cutchin Yarborough (Hubert), of Greenville, the Rev. Josephine Cutchin Holler (David), of Sumter, Johnson Hunter Cutchin Jr., of Easley, Amy Cutchin Fraikin (Gaetan), of San Diego, Calif., Nancy Cutchin Copa (Juan), of Tallahassee, Fla., and Kevin Ray Ross (Sandy), of Easley; eight great-grandchildren, Antonia Stewart Holler, Greyson Hunter Holler, Owings Elizabeth Holler, Cassidy Rae Ross, Banks Kevin Ross, Chanel Kayla Fraikin, Alexandra Anais Fraikin and Carolyne MacFarlane Yarborough.
Mr. Cutchin was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph Henry Cutchin Sr. and William Holland Cutchin; and his sisters, Inez Elizabeth Kollock and Mary Dunreath Campbell.
Graveside committal services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Robinson Memorial Gardens, 1425 Powdersville Road, Easley. This service will be open to family and friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday by the Rev. Bill Seel and the Rev. Linda Sharp at Easley Presbyterian Church, with family visitation immediately following in the church parlor.

The body is at Robinson Funeral Home-Downtown, 104 S. First St., Easley. The family is at the home of Kevin and Sandy Ross, 210 Walnut Hill Drive, Easley, Mr. Cutchin's former home.
Braxton married Josephine Hunter, daughter of Joseph Johnson Hunter and Nancy Craig, on 20 Oct 1939. (Josephine Hunter was born on 25 Dec 1915 in Owings, S.C. and died on 4 Oct 1999 in Easley, Pickens Co., South Carolina.)
