The 1940 Federal Census for Martinsville, Henry Co., VA, District 112-2, page 27A, dated April 5, 1940 records Henry D. (28 - VA) and Eleanor (25 - VA) Byrd with children Betty J. (8) and Herman L. (4) renting in the home of his mother at at 216 College Avenue. The home is owned by the widow Lillie B. Byrd (58 - VA) who is living there with her children Chester (26 - VA), Douglas (23 - VA), Eva (21 - VA), and Roy (15 - VA). The schooling completed is as follows: Henry, 4 years of grade school; Eleanor, 2 years of high school; Lillie, 5 years of grade school; Chester, 1 year of high school; Douglas and Eva, 4 years of high school; Roy, 2 years of grade school. Also renting at 216 College is Herman C. Harrell (26 - VA) with his wife Susie M. (25 - NC).
