bullet  General Notes:

The 1860 Federal Census for Phoenixville, Chester County, Pa. (page 668) records a James Hagan (22 - water tender) living with a Thomas Hagan (55 - puddler), Barbara Hagan (58), William Hagan (31 - puddler), and Mary Hagan (30 - domestic). This may be the family of George and Barbara Hagen in that Barbara and James are the right age and William and Mary could be the other children as listed in the 1840 census. Thomas ... is a puzzle. Perhaps Barbara remarried and the census taker recorded Hagen for her husband's name. Another reason this is probably the correct family is that Mary Essick, future wife of James Hagen, is listed just 25 pages over in this census record.

James Hagan (sic) is recorded in the June 1863 Draft Registration for Chester & Delaware Counties. His residence is Phoenixville, age is 25, and his occupation is Engineer. He is single.

James Hagen stayed in Phoenixville, Chester Co., PA. He married Mary Essick ca 1867 and had 2 daughters, Katherine and Mary. The daughters never married and after James died, ca 1899, they continued to live with their mother in Phoenixville.

The 1870 Federal Census for Phoenixville, Chester Co., PA dated July 21, 1870 records James Hagen, age 33, born in PA, as married to Mary Hagen, age 29, born in PA, with a child, Catherine Hagen, age 2. James is working as an engineer in a rolling mill. The family is boarding with Mary's mother, Catherine Essick, age 67, born in PA., (the writing looks like Efsick, however, a transcription of the actual writing by ancestry.com - 1880 census confirms Essick with the old style "f" for "s").

In the 1880 Federal Census for Phoenixville, Chester Co., PA dated June 30, 1880, records James Hagen, age 42, as married to Mary Hagen, age 39, born in PA., with two daughters, Catherine, age 12 and Mary, age 7 living on Main Street. James is working as an engineer. Mother-in-law Catherine Essick, age 78, is living with the family.

Boyd's Chester County directory, 1884-85 lists James Hagen, engineer, h High ur Main

Boyd's Chester County, Pennsylvania directory, 1896-97 lists James Hagen, engineer, h 233 High / Kate Hagen, looper, h 233 High / Mary E. Hagen, operator, h 233 High

By 1900, Mary Hagen is recorded as a widow. (see notes on James' wife, Mary, for the 1904 Phonixville Directory, as well as 1900, 1910, 1920, & 130 census records) The mother, Mary, and daughters Katherine and Mary E., remain in Phoenixville at 233 High Street through the 1930 census. Katherine and Mary E. Hagen never marry.
