General Notes:
Henry Bascom Hagen probably got his name from the neighboring Henry Bascom Appleton family. As of 1860 he is still living with his parents in Martic Township and is unmarried. Henry dies in Oct 1865 and in 1870 his widow and daughter are living next door to his parents, Davis and Margaret Hagen.
Several 1862 - 1866 U.S. IRS Tax Assessment Lists for Pennsylvania, District 9 (www.ancestry.com) record Henry B. Hagen as a retail merchant as well as an Axe Maker and Blacksmith [occupation frequently listed as "Axes and other Smith work"] in Mt. Nebo, Martic Township.
Email in part dated April 1, 2009 From: Linda L. Kaser Bo, ... I found Henry Bascom Hagen in the Mt. Nebo Methodist Cemertery records (from the Martic cemetery book). This is what the tombstone said: "Bascom, Henry, s/o David and Margart Hegan, w: Mary Jane Hagen, 5/5/1836-10/8/1865, 27y." Same cemetery as Katherine Bealer Hagen, Elijah's daughter.
The 1870 Federal Census for Martic Township, Lancaster Co., PA page 23B records Davis Hagen (60 - Blacksmith) with wife Margaret (55) and children Davis (22 - Blacksmith), Sarah (21), William (18), Annie (15), Francis (8), and Eva (5). Next door is Davis' daughter-in-law, Mary J. Hagen (26 - Domestic Servant), and her daughter Emma Hagen (6) in the household of Mortimer (29) and Annie (21) ODonnall. Mary J. Hagen is the widow of Henry Bascom Hagen. Near by are sons of Davis and Margaret Hagen: Albert Hagen (25 - Blacksmith) and John Hagen (29 - Blacksmith) and their families.
