bullet  General Notes:

The 2nd wife of Bolden Riddick Doughtie was Etta Miltiere who, according to family notes, was a 1st cousin of Bolden's 1st wife, Cornelia. It is a fact, recorded in the 1880 Federal Census, that Mary Etta Miltiere was living (with her parents and siblings) next door to Bolden, Cornelia and family. (1880, Nansemond Co., Va., ED#53, page 66B records Bolling R. Doughte (sic) and family) ... see general notes on her grand mother, Margaret Savage, for 1st cousin relationship.

According to Inez Daughtrey Hagen (this researcher's mother) Mary Etta was known to the family as Cousin Et(ta). Etta was a housekeeper for B R Doughtie after the death of his wife, Cornelia. Bolden and Etta would later marry (as told to me by my cousin, Bolden Riddick Doughtie, grandson of B R Doughtie as well as my mom, Inez Daughtrey Hagen in 1999)

According to Bolden's great grand daughter Ginny Layman in 2004: "Mary Etta claimed Bolden owed her money at his death. His property and possessions were auctioned to pay Mary Etta's claims. Sons Luther and Wise Carlton bid on many of their father's belongings. Etta did not like the step children and they did like her."

She is buried in the MILTEER CEMETERY http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~vaschs/ncocem2.txt
Located in Whaleyville, Va.; from Suffolk, take route 13 south to Whaleyville, turn right on Mineral Springs Road, go about 2 miles, cross springs and the cemetery is on the left about 30 yards from the roadside.

Her parents are buried here as well.

The 1930 Federal Census for the Holy Neck District of Nansemond Co., Va., ED 6, page 97B, dated April 2, 1930 in Holland Town, records Etta Danghtis (sic) [Doughtie] (65) living with her sister, Emily Milteer (67), and brother, Frank P. Milteer (71), on Main Street. Emily is the head of household, single, and a seamstress. Frank is married but no wife is listed. Etta is listed as a widow.

In a Feb 13, 2004 email from Ginny Layman:
... According to what my mother told me several years ago her grandfather [Bolden Riddick Doughtie] did have a farm and sawmill, but when he died the children got nothing that they were supposed to get because his second wife, Mary Etta Milteer, claimed he owed money to her and she took everything. B.R. [Doughtie, grandson of Bolden] and my mother were discussing this at my Aunt Hazel's funeral and he said his father never got anything he was supposed to (I was standing there and heard this myself). He agreed with my mother's statement. The way they talked none of the children liked Mary Etta and she didn't like them, so, other than what Uncle Carlton and Granddaddy bought at the estate sale, they got nothing else. I don't know exactly where the farm is but will ask my Aunt Allie if she knows. I don't think my mother will be able to remember, but I'll try. ...
