bullet  General Notes:

To paraphrase a family story: Paul Hagen's birth name was Derald Revere Hagen but his mother called him Paul (son Derald indicates it was his grandmother who called him Paul). He found out about the "official" name when he applied for a birth certificate for a Boy Scout trip to Canada. He had his name legally changed to Paul Derald Hagen in 1957.

Well, finally (February 2006) the original birth certificate for Paul Hagen has been uncovered. It turns out that you must request a "pre-amended" document. This type of request was only discovered after a phone conversation with the Vitals Records for Pennsylvania resulted in being transferred to the "right person". This brings an interesting question of how is one to know of the existance of a "pre-amended" document? However, the end result records (file number 0976610-1915 PA Dept of Health) the May 19, 1915 birth of Derald Revere Hagen in Cumberland Co., PA to Alvah C. Hagen, age 20, born in Philadelphia, and Alta Grace Kyle (sic), age 19, born in Mechanicsburg. It was filed on June 11, 1915. Apparently someone did not know the correct spelling of Alta's last name ... was it intentional? (Whatever the case, her headstone at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester, VA has her maiden name as Kyle.) The birth certificate states "This is a copy of the record prior to the amendment of 12-13-1957."

See general notes on Paul's father, Alvah, under WWI Draft Registration that records Paul living with his parents and brother, Alvah Jr., in June of 1917, at 11 1/2 West Clay Street in Richmond, VA.

The 1920 Federal Census for Richmond City, Va. ED#83, page 114A taken Jan.7, 1920 records Paul D. Hagen (4 7/12) with his parents Alvah C. (25) and Alta (25) Hagen and his brother Alvah C., Jr. (2 2/12) living at 3226 West Main Street. Alvah is listed as employed as a dye sinker at a foundry.

The 1930 Federal Census for Middle Fork Township, Forsyth Co., N.C. page 262B records Paul D. Hagen (14) living with his parents Alvah C. (34) and Alta G. (34) Hagen and his sister Margarett J. (7) on N.C. Highway #60, City View Development. Alvah is listed as employed as a multigraph operator in a printing office.

The September 1940 birth certificate for Wilson Derald Hagen records Paul and Inez living at 5217 King William Road in Richmond, VA. This is about 12 blocks from where Paul's grandfather Edwin Hagen will live near Forest Hills Park.
The 1944 Richmond City Directory lists Paul and Inez living at 2609 Lockhaven Blvd. in Southside.
The 1946 Richmond City Directory lists Paul and Inez living at 2302 Warwick Ave. in Southside.
The 1947 Richmond City Directory lists Paul and Inez living at 2913 Montrose Ave. in Northside. [See research notes]
In 1954 they moved a few blocks away to 3114 Edgewood Ave. By 1959, the year their oldest son went to Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va., they moved to 904 Turnbull Ave. in West End (Henrico County). They remained there for the rest of their married life. Inez had to eventually move to Manor Care, an assisted care living facility, in Midlothian before failing health required a move to Salem, Va. where son Bo Hagen and his wife Mary Lou and family shared her last months.

(25 - VA) Hagen living at 5217 King William Road. They rent their home at $40/month. Paul has 4 years of high school [family stories indicate he never graduated] and is a Printer for Reynolds Metals Co. Inez has 4 years of high school and is not working. They indicate that they were living in Chesterfield County as of April 1, 1935. Paul earned $1,500 working 52 weeks during the last year. Their home is 6 blocks away from his aunt, Margaret Ann Hagen Thornton ... see general notes on Margaret Hagen for 1940 census facts.

bullet  Research Notes:

Paul and Inez moved to 2913 Montrose Avenue in the Northside of Richmond, VA in 1947. Inez's sister and her husband, LeClaire and Don Hunt, bought the home and lived upstairs while renting the downstairs to the Hagen family. LeClaire and Don eventually built a home on Whitby Road several miles away and Paul and Inez moved a few blocks north to 3114 Edgewood Avenue. The Hagen's moved again in 1959 to 904 Turnbull Avenue in the west end.
One of the family stories this researcher remembers is that the home on Montrose had been owned by Governor Tuck. An interesting story that needed to be looked into:
Well ... the Gov Tuck in question was William Munford Tuck who served as the 55th Governor of Virginia from 1946 to 1950. He was born in 1896 the youngest son of Halifax County, Virginia tobacco warehouseman Robert James Tuck and Virginia Susan Fritts. Well the city directories below record the following regarding 2913 Montrose Avenue:

The 1942 Richmond City Directory, page 691 records:
Parham F. (Cornelia) Tuck aud State Comptroller h2913 Montrose av
Mary S. Tuck clk Va Auto Mut Ins Co r 2913 Montrose av

The 1946 Richmond City Directory, page 608 records:
P. Franklin (Cornelia) Tuck chf clk rev section State Comptroller h2913 Montrose av
also Cornelia Tuck clk Fed Res Bank r2913 Montrose av
Richmond City Directories record:
Paul and Inez Hagen are residing at 2913 Montrose av from 1947 until 1954

So who was Parham Franklin Tuck? As it turns out, he was the oldest brother of Governor William Munford Tuck ... so there are the facts behind this researcher growing up in the home of the Governornor of Virginia. And by the way ... the road in west Henrico near by Turnbull Avenue, Parham Road, is not named for Parham F. Tuck. The name Parham comes from a resident of the area during the mid 19th century: Junius S. Parham ... no relation to the Tuck family.
