General Notes:
The WWI Draft Registration Cards records Romie Hamden Daughtrey's birth date as March 24, 1891. His physical description is medium height and medium build with brown hair and blue eyes. He is living at 911 Duke Street in Norfolk, VA.
Romie H. Daughtrey is found in the 1920 Federal Census in the City of Norfolk, Va. District 229 with wife Jane G. and adopted son Harry. This is not consistent with Emily Christine Daughtrey's notes which have Romie married to Ester Widegon with a son John. Angelena Moore (see source 141: Ancestry.com lists research of Angelena G. Moore (hmoore2833@aol.com) as of Sept. 24, 2003) has his marriage to an Esther on Dec. 5, 1931. That is probably a second marriage for Romie. Later reseach confirms Romie's 1st marriage to Jane G. Banks followed be a divorce and then a 2nd marriage to Esther Widegon; however, Marriage and Death Certificate indicate her maiden name as spelled "Widgeon".
Romie H. Daughtrey is found in the 1930 Federal Census in the City of Norfolk, VA, District 83 on West 26th Street. He is listed as divorced and living with his sister Pattie and brother-in-law M. R. Reid.
Both the 1920 and 1930 census records indicate Romie works for a paper company. The 1920 Federal Census for Norfolk Monroe Ward, Norfolk (Independent City), Virginia, District 229, page 205A, dated January 13, 1920 records Romie H. Daughtrey (29 - VA/VA/VA) with his wife Jane G. Daughtrey (31 - VA/NC/NC) and adopted son, Harry Daughtrey (5 - VA/VA/VA). Romie is employed as a Paper Worker at a Book Factory.
See general notes on his sister, Pattie Daughtrey, for 1930 census facts.
The 1941 Norfolk City Directory lists Romie H. Daughtrey working as a forman for the Hampton Roads Paper Co. and living with his wife, Mrs. Esther W. Daughtrey, at 4100 Gosnold Ave, Norfolk, VA.
The WWII Draft Registration Card (for men born on or after April 28, 1877 and on or before February 16, 1897) for Romie H. Daughtrey dated April 27, 1942 lists his date of birth as March 24, 1891 in Isle of Wight Co., VA. He is living at 4100 Gosnold Ave, Norfolk, VA. He is working for Hampton Roads Paper Company at 235 Main Street in Norfolk and his physical description is 5' 11", 190 lbs with blue eyes, brown hair and light/ruddy complexion. The person who will always know his address is listed as J. H. Daughtrey of 221 Mt. Vernon Ave. (period Norfolk City directories indicate this might be Jesse H. Daughtrey and wife Nannie F. Daughtrey, listed as a widow in 1942 ... however, this researcher originally believed this J. H. Daughtrey was most likely John Hurley Daughtrey, Romie's brother ... the address 221 Mt. Vernon Avenue is clearly that of Jesse H. Daughtrey and his wife, Nannie. Note: Jesse H. Daughtrey was born March 1871 ... the 1920 census records Jesse married to Nannie F. and a daughter, Mary E. Daughtrey born ca 1910 ... the 1930 census records Jesse, born 1872, with Nannie, born 1878, and Mary Elizabeth, born 1909 with Jesse and Nannie married for 25 years.) Note: The 1880 census records a Jessie H. Daughtrey, born 1871, living with his parents in Holy Neck, District 55: R. C. Daughtrey (44) with his wife M. F. (41) and children Theodocia (18), R. Lee (16), Ella M. (14), Charlie (11), Jessie H. (9), Fannie M. (7), Williard (4), and Walter F. (2). The 1870 census records Robert (33) and Mary F. (32) Daughtrey with children Theodosia E. (9), Robert L. (5), Ella M. (3), and Charles (1). Also in the household is Mary Daughtrey (45).
The 1951 Norfolk City Directory lists Romie H. Daughtrey working as dept mgr Hampton Roads Paper Co. and living with his wife, Mrs. Esther W. Daughtrey, and son John H. Daughtrey at 4100 Gosnold Ave, Norfolk, VA. John & Esther continue to be listed at 4100Gosnold Av through the 1960 Directory.
