Joseph John Daughtrey was a soldier for the Confederacy in the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private on June 4, 1861 in Company G, 5th Virginia Cavalry Regiment and later transferred and served as a corporal in the Nansemond Cavalry (Company J, 13th Virginia Cavalry Regiment ).

He dropped the Morgan from his given name(s) and was known as John (Called Uncle John by Emily Christine Daughtrey).

The 1870 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., VA, Zuni Station P. O., page 291A records the Daughtrey household headed by Joseph John. J. J. (40) is not married and his father, Joshua, recently passed away, however, Priscilla (66) is still living there with her daughters Margaret (30) and Asenith (25) Daughtrey. Also in the household is Josiah Daughtrey (10).

The 1880 Federal Census for Isle of Wight Co., VA, District 33, page 320B, dated June 10, 1880 records J. J. Daughty [Joseph John Daughtrey] with wife A. E. (30) [Anna Elizabeth Moore] and children R. T. (4) [Richard Tazewell] and E. J. (2) [Effie Jane]. Also in the household is G. W. More (20) [George Washington Moore, Anna's brother].

The 1900 Federal Census for Windsor Magisterial District, Isle of Wight Co., Va. ED#17, page 120B records John J. (marked over ... could be Joseph John underneath) (May 1827) and Anna E. (Aug 1856) Daughtrey with children Edwin B. (Sept 1882), Annie L. (March 1886), Patty (Nov 1887), and Romie (March 1891). John and Anna have been married 26 years with 9 children of which 7 are still alive.

The Isle of Wight birth records posted at ancestry.com for parents Joseph (J.J.) (Joe) (John) and Anna (Annie) (A.E.) Daughtery list children as follows: No Name (Jul 3, 1875), Richard (July 15, 1876), Effie (May 15, 1878), No Name (Sept 1, 1880), Edwin (Sept 8, 1882), Annie (Mar 8, 1885), Martha (Nov 25, 1887), and Not Legible (Mar 4, 1891). SSDI records indicate the March 4, 1891 birth (as listed in the IOW Birth records and above in the 1900 census data) to be Romie.

Joseph married Anna Elizabeth Moore, daughter of Orris Moore and Martha Shields Beale, on 30 Apr 1874 in Southampton Co., Va..30 (Anna Elizabeth Moore was born in Aug 1856 in Southampton Co., Va, died on 9 Nov 1935 in Norfolk, VA. 30 and was buried on 11 Nov 1935 in Franklin, VA.) The cause of her death was Organic Heart Disease.

Annie E. Daughtrey - The Civil War pension application for Annie's former husband, John Edwards, dated Sept 24, 1924, names her marriage and divorce to Jno Edwards. She married him on January 27, 1919 and divorced him on July 31, 1923. Annie is applying for a pension under the service of her first husband, Joseph John Daughtrey. She states that Joseph John served under Col A. Savage and Capt P. H. Lee in the 13th Va Cavalry. They were married April 30, 1874 in Southampton Co. by Rev R. H. Holland and her husband died Sept 16, 1901. She has lived in Norfolk for 23 years and is currently living alone at 418 W. 25th Street.
