bullet  General Notes:

The Daughtrey Family Cemetery just inside the Isle of Wight Co. line on Lee's Mill Road coming from the City of Suffolk (old Nansemond Co.) is all but gone. In a visit in April of 2004, the plot, in the middle of a plowed field, held several sunken mounds with traces of broken tombstone. On one piece of granite you could read "died Nov. 22, 1940" This had to be the headstone of Lilly Daughtrey in that her death certificate records her date of death as Nov. 22, 1940. Supposedly, also in the plot, are Lilly's father, Joseph John, his brother, Theophilus [killed during the Civil War], and their parents Joshua and Prissy Daughtrey.

The 1920 Federal Census for Norfolk Jefferson Ward, Norfolk (Independent City),Virginia, District 87, page 53A records Annie E. Edwards (59) with husband John A. Edwards (55 - VA/NC/NC) and her daughter with her first husband, Joseph John Daughtrey, Lillian Daughtrey (32) (written as Daughtry). Also in the household are Lillian's children: Herman (13), Virginia (12), and Marvin (10). It is of interest that these children are also listed in the household of Lillian's former husband, William T. Daughtrey, in the 1920 Federal Census. (see notes on William T. Daughtrey for 1920 census facts) Annie, John, Lillian and family are living at 240 York Street. Lillian is a helper in a Photo Plant while John works as a boiler maker at the Navy Yard. It is of interest that Lillian's future husband is a widower living in Norfolk in 1920 ... see notes on Eugene Gilliam.

The 1930 Federal Census for Norfolk (Independent City),Virginia, District 90, page 258A records Lillian D. [Daughtrey] Gilliam (43) with her new husband Eugene Gilliam (53 - VA/VA/VA) and Lillian's daughter Virginia Daughtrey (20) living at 4807 Newport Avenue. They own their home valued at $8,000. Lillian is a clerk in an optical company, Eugene is a contractor building houses, and Virginia is a stenographer in a real estate office. Eugene was first married at age 25 while Lillian at age 19.

The 1940 Federal Census for Norfolk (Independent City),Virginia, District 114-60, page 737B, dated April 9, 1940 records Lillian D. [Daughtrey] Gilliam (55) with her husband Eugene Gilliam (65 - VA/VA/VA) and Lillian's son, John M. Daughtrey (26) living at 791 Fairfax Avenue. Eugene has completed 2 years of college and is working as a general contractor in construction while John has completed 3 years of high school and operates a fruit stand which is his own business. Lillian has completed 2 years of high school. They are renting their home at $35 / month and no one reports having earned any income during the last 52 weeks.
