He is living with his wife, Mabel Clare Adkins in Lynchburg, Campbell Co., VA and is a Merchant and farmer. His employer is Adkins Hardware Company. He is medium height and stoiut build with blue eyes and red hair. He signs his name John Peter Adkins.

The 1920 Federal Census for Brookville, Campbell Co., Va., ED# 70, page records John P. (45-Retail Merchant) and Mabel M. (42) Adkins with children Eugene M. (21), John P. Jr. (18), W. Royal (16), H. Gordon (14), Frederick S. (12), Mabel M. (10), Ella F. (8), Mildred (4 9/12), Carlton G. (3 1/12).

John Adkins' death certificate records his name as "John Peter Adkins". He died of brichial asthma on Oct 25, 1922. Adkins family papers compiled by Harry T. Adkins in the 1950s, copies of which were given to his brothers and sisters, record family genealogy including Greenberry's Civil War Record. Greenberry's CW record is reported as "taken from the Adkins Bible, as written by his son, on May 18, 1920, namely by John Preston Adkins." Since Preston is also a family name, I decided John's middle name, in this genealogical record, must be Preston, even though his death ceretificate records "Peter". Then I uncovered his WWI Draft Registration Card dated September 12, 1918 and found his name as "John Peter Adkins". The document is even signed in his hand as John Peter Adkins. John's date of birth is listed as September 27, 1874 and he is living in Lynchburg, Campbell Co., VA. His wife is listed as Mabel Clare Adkins and he is employed as a Merchant and Farmer at Adkins Hardware Company in Lynchburg. His physical description is medium height and stout build with blue eyes and red hair. Although John may have been named "Preston" at birth, it is clear to this reseacher that he wanted to be known as "Peter". Note: The marriage cerificate for his son, Eugene Morrison Adkins, names his father as John Preston Adkins ... see marriage notes for Eugene Morrison Adkins.
Also, the death certificate for John P. Adkins' son, Frederick Stanley Adkins, records the name John Preston Adkins ... see medical notes for Frederick Stanley Adkins.
