Randolph owned 202 acres of land 14 miles southwest of Suffolk. The name "Eugene" Randolph Rawls was used in an article about Eli Daughtrey as a Deacon in the Old Hebron Church of Carrsville. He is named as the father of Eli's wife, Julia Anna Rawls. The article was written sometime after 1976 in that it references the death of his daughter, Emily Christine Daughtrey.
The 1840 Federal Census for Nansemond Co., Virginia records Randolph Rawls as head of household with: [free white persons] 1 male (20 - 30), 1 female (30 - 40) - 1 male slave (24 - 34) & 1 female slave (10 - 23).
Randolph is listed as Randol Rawls (38) in the 1850 Nansemond Co., Va. census. Also in the household are Christian (28), Thomas J. (9). Robert (7), Julianna (5), Josephine (3), Angeline (1), and Christian Howell (46). Nearby is Nathanial (45) and Litha (42) Rawls and family. The 1850 Slave Schedule lists Randol with 4 slaves: 20-f, 12-f, 8-f, 4-m. The family has real estate valued at $500.
The 1860 Federal Census for the Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., Virginia, Suffolk P. O., page 595 records Randolph (49) and Christian (39) Rawls with children Thomas (18), Robert (17), Julia (15), Josephene (13), Angeline (11), Mary (9), Cornelia (7), Randolph (5), Andrew (3), and David (2/12). Also in the household are black families: David (50) and Mary (35) Copeland with children Sarah (18), Oliver (2), and Jesse (1) as well as Louisa Copelane (22) with Isaac (8), James (4), and Mary (1). Next door is Andrew J. (33) and Elizabeth (36) Rawls. The family has real estate valued at $2,000 and personal property at $4,000. They are reasonably "well off" but certainly not wealthy. The 1860 Slave Schedule lists Randol with 5 slaves: 85-f, 45-f, 13-m, 10-f, 3-f.

(23), Cornelia (21), David P. (19), and Braxton B. (17). Next door is his Randolph's brother, A. J. Rawls (53 - VA/VA/VA), with his wife Indianna (43 - NC/NC/NC) and children Ina (25), Emma (20), Charlie L. (13), Pokahontas (10), Cleopatra (8), L. B. (5), and Endie(1).
